FAQs
What does “variable contrast” (VC/MG) mean?
Variable contrast paper – also known as VC (Variable Contrast) or MG (Multigrade) – allows you to control the contrast using filters or color heads.
Instead of needing separate papers for each grade, a single VC/MG paper covers the full contrast range – from soft (grade 0) to hard (grade 5).
This gives you the flexibility to fine-tune the image during enlargement to match your negative and desired look.
What is the difference between PE(RC) and fiber-based (FB) paper?
RC Paper (Resin Coated): Plastic-coated, dries quickly, lies flat
FB Paper (Fibre Based): Fibre-based, classic feel, longer processing time, premium look
Which paper finish suits my subject?
- Matte: non-reflective, subtle – great for portraits and documentary work
- Glossy: deeper blacks, higher contrast – ideal for exhibitions and gallery prints
- Pearl: textured look with a fine surface structure
How sensitive is photographic paper to light?
Yes – very sensitive! Always use safelight in the darkroom, or the paper will be fogged or exposed.
Can I develop RC and fiber-based paper the same way?
In principle, yes – both types follow the same basic process (developer – stop bath – fixer).
However, there are differences in processing time and aftercare:
- RC paper (resin coated) is faster to process, requires shorter washing, and dries flat.
- Fiber-based paper (FB) needs longer washing and drying times, but offers a premium feel and archival quality.
